Our Pastor

Rev. Fr. John M. Gracey

A 1993 graduate of St. John's seminary in Camarillo, CA, he was assigned to St. Anthony of Padua Parish in Fresno, CA. from 1993 to 1996. From 1996 to 1997 he served at St. Philip the Apostle Parish in Bakersfield. 1997 to 1998 saw him serving at St. Joseph's in Selma, CA. In 1998 he was given his first pastorate at St. John's in Tipton, CA and served there until 1999.

Fr. Gracey came to Bishop from Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in California City and Boron, where he had been pastor for the previous five years.

Fr. Gracey is the fifth of six children, a family of five boys and one girl who were all born and raised in California. His mother, Pat, was born in Mojave and grew up in Tehachapi, while his father, Doyle, was born in a rural part of Iowa and grew up in Chicago. Because his family was local to the Mojave/Tehachapi area, being in California City and Boron was of a hometown experience for Fr. Gracey, since his mother's family has been in the area for more than 80 years.

According to Fr. Gracey, the man and pastor that he is today came in large part from his upbringing by two strong parents.

"The Marine Corps was very important in my early life," he said. "My father was a career Marine and served for thirty years, (during) a career that included World War II, Korea and two tours of duty in Vietnam.

When asked about his mother, Fr. Gracey said " she is a strong women. When my father was overseas for extended periods of time, she had to handle everything, and did it well." Fr. Gracey also calls his "mother very creative, writing, singing and performing in local theatre. Fr. Gracey attributes his creative side and sense of humor to her influence.

"You go where you are needed," Fr. Gracey said, "and so for now and hopefully for many years to come, I'm here in Bishop, with the love of God, I will do His will and bring others to Christ.
